Bowstring Joists utilize a rolled top chord with a straight bottom chord (as opposed to a barrel joist that utilizes rolled chords on both top and bottom chords). Because of the changes in the load forces involved with these types of joists, both horizontal and vertical, the design, detailing, and engineering is crucial. It is equally critical for any other load or deflection requirements to be clearly detailed on the contract drawings.
